Book Synopsis
The author of the book is Haggai the prophet (Hag.1:1;
2:1). He is mentioned twice in the book of Ezra (Ezra
5:1-2; 6:14).
God sent two prophets (Haggai and Zechariah) to
preach to the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem
some sixteen years earlier. Haggai’s message to the
remnant was a message of rebuke (Hag.1:1-11) and
encouragement (Hag.1:13; 2:4-9).
The people were too busy building their own houses
while neglecting the house of God (Hag.1:2-4). It was
time for them to get their priorities right; rebuild the
temple and worship God accordingly.
To better understand the background and setting of
Haggai’s prophecy, you need to go back and read
Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther, especially....
