In general, "community development" incorporates a broad range of initiatives, programs, and progress aimed at improving the well-being and lives of inhabitants of an area and advancing a sense of purpose into a cooperative community spirit. These initiatives may range from establishing the basics of local government, law enforcement, fire protection, sources of potable and industrial water, and street maintenance, to enrichment initiatives through newspapers, schools, medical providers and healthcare facilities, churches, and entertainment. Thus, community development in its simplest terms establishes services dedicated to advancing the everyday lives of the inhabitants of an area into a community.
