Book Synopsis
This story set in a small Ohio town in October 1931, during the Great Depression. It’s a tale of community, suspicion, and a mysterious poisoning that shakes the town of St. Ives. It’s a fascinating snapshot of a struggling town. St. Ives is dealing with closed stores, families losing their homes, and a general sense of fear. A traveling speaker named David St. John Poole and his small group focus on nature, harmony, and question organized religion. That unsettles some folks in town, especially during such tough times. It’s like the town is a small ecosystem resistant to change, and David’s group is shaking things up.
David suddenly collapses on stage. He shows symptoms like dizziness, nausea, vomiting. He loses consciousness and ambulance is called and an investigation begins.
The story gets even darker. Gil also kills James and Martin’s beloved dog, Joe, by scattering chocolate and onions on their island home. The motive was Gil’s bitterness over the changes David represented and the attention he received.
Meanwhile, there’s a parallel emotional subplot about Martin’s family. He returns to his family farm for his mother’s reburial, only to discover her body is missing from the casket. That mystery unfolds with the family revealing they had secretly cremated her and scattered her ashes in the church garden, honoring her wishes while avoiding conflict.
It’s a story about family conflict, dignity, and personal relationships and it shows how fear and suspicion can grip a small community during hard times, leading to conflict and injustice. It also highlights how new ideas can inspire hope but provoke resistance.
