Book Synopsis
This book invites an awareness of woodpeckers as expressions of the wonder and enchantment of our forests. Designed for young people ages 7-12. The workbook-format curriculum includes guided interactive learning exercises about woodpecker adaptations, communication, habitat, and foraging strategies. Participants will learn how to identify different species of woodpeckers and wood-dwelling insects from the marks left in the bark and wood of trees. Chapters are also included on the topics of photosynthesis, respiration, and nutrient exchange in the woodpecker's forest ecosystem. In addition, there are introductory how-to chapters about sketching and writing a poem about woodpeckers and their forest homes. The capstone project involves exploring ways to help create habitat for woodpeckers. In the back of the workbook you'll find a field guide for the woodpeckers of eastern North America with photographs as well as information about habitat and food preferences for each species.
