Rumors are rife that other countries tried and failed. That is speculation. Rumors were that men were lost in the efforts. No evidence has ever been found to support those ideas. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. It means it was never reported.
Twin planets circleing the sun theories abound. How would we ever know?
