Book Synopsis
Thumb Sticks and Hand Grenades came from a desire to combine the study of literature into the study of video games. This work presents an expansion upon the ludo-narrative theories typically used to analyze game narratives by adding literary war theory to the mix to better understand how Halo and Wolfenstein's presentation of war. Ultimately this application uncovers the flaws of American Exceptionalism and how the characters in these games must come to terms with this flaw before they are able to succeed.
