Book Synopsis
The fourth grade student, Luke, has a problem. His friend keeps stealing his ruler in class. Luke loses his temper and whacks his friend over the head. Not a good choice, but how can Luke make better choices in the future?

Luke then remembers the STOP - THINK - CHOOSE problem solving method.. Luke and his trusted dog Lucy eventually come up with a better plan than a ruler whack. The STOP - THINK - CHOOSE plan is good for both Luke AND his friend.

This book as well as the others in the STOP - THINK - CHOOSE book series includes interactive prompts throughout the story that challenge the child reader to problem-solve alongside Luke and Lucy.

The Ruler Whack introduces us to Luke, a regular 4th grader at Green Tree School. He's got two sisters and has a pet dog, Lucy. He plays soccer and baseball. He might be your neighbor, friend, or classmate -- just a regular guy. However, a kid who sits near him in school keeps taking his ruler. It's really frustrating!
The fourth time he does it, Luke whacks him in the head with that ruler -- and the teacher sees him. Luke is assessed a recess detention and gets an earful of reasons why he shouldn't whack people. When he goes home, he seeks out Lucy and begins to process what happened. He thinks about what he should do when someone or something gets to be too much. He should Stop, Think, Choose.
This beautifully-illustrated book is begging to be read with your favorite youngster to spark sharing and discussion. (There are some embedded questions to start the discussion early in the story.) However, the great discussions are waiting to be had as Luke processes his options using the Stop, Think, Choose framework.
What a great way to help young people learn that nobody is perfect, that everyone faces frustrating situations, and there is a good, clear strategy to use in those times.
Every library and home library needs a copy of this book, to help arm young readers with realistic strategies to use in some of those aggravating times.
I can easily imagine this series becoming a mainstay in helping children find an effective way to help manage life's sometimes-difficult interactions.
