The Historic Garveyite District of Buffalo tells the powerful story of how a global Black nationalist movement took root in one American city and transformed it into a center of international activism, culture, and economic cooperation. Centered on UNIA Division #79, Liberty Hall at 278 Jefferson Avenue, the Colored Musicians Club, and surrounding institutions, this book uncovers the lives of the men and women who built one of the most dynamic Garveyite communities in the United States. From mass parades and brass bands to credit unions, beauty salons, and international diplomacy, Buffalo’s Garveyites connected local struggle to global Black liberation. Through archival records, newspapers, and historical research, this work restores their names, addresses, and accomplishments to the historical record.
