Book Synopsis
Curtis Abbott, an educated young man from East Bethel, Vermont signed up early in the Civil War to be a sharpshooter. He witnessed and lived through some of the most important battles of the Civil War. In hundreds of letters sent home to Vermont from 1861 to 1865, Abbott details camp life, battles, and marches through the Mid- Atlantic towns where he was stationed. This cache of letters is made even more powerful through Curtis Abbott's additional writings. Later in life, he documented the history of his company (Company H). He corresponded with other veterans from his regiment, completing a comprehensive history from the soldier's point of view. After the War, he settled near Boston, studied law at Harvard, married and had children. He had a successful law career, but throughout his life he continued to think and write about the Civil War. He lived to be in his mid-90s, always remembering those war years. His granddaughter and her husband have preserved his writings and stories.
