Book Synopsis
This is a new black and white edition of the book that was first published in 2002 and which has become a "must-have" book for potters working at cone 6. The original color version of the book is now out-of-print; this edition contains all of the original information, updated, and color images of the glazes are available on our website at John and Ron, August 2013

Do you want your glazes to be stable or durable in use AND attractive? Do you want to be sure they will not leach significant quantities of metals into food or drink? This is the first (and so far the only) book to address these questions in depth. Also covered are preventing crazing or shivering/dunting, in-studio testing of glazes and pottery to assure they are suitable for their intended use, and more. A wide variety of tested glazes are included as well as detailed guidance for formulating your own glazes. Much more information about the book is available at

In order to preserve my original copy I decided to purchase the B&W. At checkout I had to pay $18.95 for regular UPS ground shipment. This seems a grossly high charge for a small book.

Purchasing on line was simple. $27.50 included book and shipping. It came fast to Canada.

This is a highly valued and respected work. The reason the ratings are so low is that people are leaving comments without rating the book. While the recipes are used by many at this point, it is actually the information on what makes a stable glaze. It is well written and easy to understand.

Only just ordered the Black and white version, I have the full colour one on loan from the library. for someone who really wants to understand glazes, this book is excellent. I say that with 40 years of being a potter behind me. It is well written, clear and helpful, a beginner and a seasoned glaze maker will both be able to gain useful information and assistance here.
I'm giving it 4/5, because I think it would benefit from colour printing.
Other than that it would deserve a five.

I understand that this is an excellent book, but I'll never know because of the outrageous shipping costs.

It was $4.15 to ship to me in Pennsylvania. That was the cheapest rate and the one I chose.
