Becoming a Disciple of Christ

There is a first century Jewish blessing that says, “May you be covered in the dust of your rabbi!” “Whose dust are you covered with?” To fully understand what it is to be a disciple, one must first understand from whence the term originated. The obvious and immediate thoughts that come to mind are the idea of following, and being a follower. But this first century blessing isn’t just about following, it is about following closely. Jewish scholars contend that when Jesus says, “Take up your cross and follow me.” He was saying “follow me so closely that you are forced to put your foot into the footprint that I just left behind.” Why? Because this was the sentiment of rabbinical culture.
