Book Synopsis
The story of the Albion State Normal School is, at its heart, the story of so many schools born out of frontier necessity, fueled by community grit, and shaped by a young state striving to civilize a rugged landscape. Established in 1893, just three years after Idaho achieved statehood, Albion was more than an institution of higher learning. The school acted as an educational lifeline by training educators for Western settlements. Over 57 years, it produced 6,560 certified teachers, forming the foundation of public instruction despite isolation and economic challenges. It was an educational lifeline. At a time when isolated settlements scrambled to build one room schoolhouses, Albion answered the call by sending thousands of trained, certified educators into the American West. Albion State Normal School was established in March 1893 in the city of Albion, Idaho, located in Cassia County.
