Elvin L. Shields received the Louisiana Tradition Bearer award in October 2021 for his works in historical cultural preservation. In July 2022 Natchitoches Northwestern State University Folk Life Center inducted Elvin into the Hall of Master Folk Artists for his twisted wire sculptures of plantation life images.
