Richard was inspired by his family’s rich Gullah heritage and the lessons passed down by his father and his grandfather.

He grew up to become a very talented carpenter as a young man. He later decided that he wanted to become an undertaker and built the first funeral parlor on Venning Street in Mount Pleasant, SC around 1905.
