The village of Lacombe initiated the "twinning" as a "FrancoFete" activity of Louisiana's Tricentennial Celebration - the state of Louisiana and the province of Alberta. The Amite River starts as two forks, about 100 miles long, with its source in Amite County, Mississippi. It courses down through the parishes of East Feliciana, St. Helena, East Baton Rouge, Livingston and Ascension, forming boundary lines between the same. On February 10, 1832, the Louisiana Legislature created Livingston Parish out of the southern portion of St. Helena Parish. This is the story of the people who played a key part in settling the Amite River, and making it the "Cradle of Livingston Parish."
