a collection of short pieces, inspired by the Bartók Mikrokosmos—for prepared digital piano by a collection of composers. Tune Books, with just the notes written down by Dan Trueman, for tunes from the recordings CrissCross, QQQ, and Trollstilt. All of these tunes in this series were made by ear, never written down as they were worked out; with Just the Notes, I’ve transcribed them, in the hopes that the notation will help others to learn them, on fiddles and guitars, or whatever instruments are on hand. I think of these as fiddle tunes, but clearly they are not your typical fiddle tunes (whatever that might mean); while I like nothing more than to play these tunes with my friends and family in informal places (like our living room, or, as it may be, our basement!), they are a bit much to pick up on the ...

Thirteen original tunes for the Hardanger d'Amore, composed and performed by Dan Trueman. The Hardanger d'Amore is a new 5-string instrument, a cross between the 5-string fiddle and the Hardanger fiddle. Dan commissioned the first of these from renowned Norwegian instrument builder Salve Håkedal in 2010, and Salve has now made more than 30 for fiddlers from around the world. These tunes—"Crooked Tunes from the Crooked Downs of Shoreham"—are a product of Dan's experiences with traditional music from Norway, Ireland, and America, contemporary and early classical music, and are named after places in Shoreham, New York, where he grew up.

Like the prepared piano, the prepared digital piano feels just like a piano under the hands and often sounds like one, but it is full of surprises; instead of bolts and screws stuck between the piano strings, virtual machines of various sorts adorn the virtual strings of the digital piano, transforming it into an instrument that pushes back, sometimes like a metronome, other times like a recording played backwards. The virtual strings also tighten and loosen on the fly, dynamically tuning in response to what is played. Nostalgic Synchronic is a set of eight etudes I composed to explore the prepared digital piano, inspired by John Cage’s Sonatas and Interludes, György Ligeti’s Études and ...
