AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE ON LOUISIANA CANE RIVER PLANTATIONS FROM SLAVERY TO SHARECROPPING & BEYOND BASED ON THE AUTHOR'S LIFE EXPERIENCE Elvin L. Shields received the Louisiana Tradition Bearer award in October 2021 for his works in historical cultural preservation. In July 2022 Natchitoches Northwestern State University Folk Life Center inducted Elvin into the Hall of Master Folk Artists for his twisted wire sculptures of plantation life images.

In Balanta B’urassa, My Sons: Those Who Resist Remain Volume I, we established the following facts: 1. Our paternal ancestors are the Balanta who live in present-day Guinea Bissau on the West Coast of Africa. 2. Our ancestors share a common lineage with Bantu and Nilo-Saharan people of North East Africa. 3. More specifically, our ancestors lived in Ta-Nihisi, Nubia. Today, that area is called Sudan. 4. Between 18,000 BC and 332 BC, Balanta ancestors made numerous migrations from Ta-Nihisi and Ta-Meri to West Africa. The third volume of Balanta B'Urassa, My Sons: Those Who Resist Remains covers the history of the Balanta people from the time of the first arrival of Portuguese to the coast of Guinea Bissau until the capture of Siphiwe Baleka's great, great, great, great, great grandfather, his arrival in the Carolinas, and his enslavement by the Blake family. This is the book that explains Balanta life prior to the European trans Atlantic slave trade and the who, what, where, when and how the majority of Balanta people ended up in North America.
