Size: 6" x 9"

This book chronicles my family and I through our conversion into Mormonism and the driving factor that led us to leave the church. Many things are taught in LDS doctrine and some of the Racial bias is taught but never thoroughly explained. When asking those about the topic of the "curse of the Lamanites" or the "curse of Cain, the descendants of Ham and Canaan" we were told to pray about it. I decided to do my do diligence and research instead.

The fifties are long gone, but the fun and joy of those days will never die. Follow me from the hills of Western Kentucky to the baseball fields of central Illinois. Follow a family that grew and lived in those times. Witness moonshine being prepared and the joy of sitting on the steps of the neighborhood store. We sat there and read comic books and shared Coke and candy. We played ball games, under out own rules. We learned when to talk and when to not speak. Most of us kept that alive, not all of us. It was a time when a boy broke a bottle in the street was considered a major crime spree. We helped, guarded and taught each other. This generation will go on until it is replaced by ano ...

These are my journal entries of 1995. I was living in Brooklyn with my friend, John, and his roommate, Liz, at the time. He had an art loft space on Duffield Street. Years later, as I was visiting my old haunts in N.Y.C., I noticed it had been converted into very expensive, high-end condominiums. But when I lived there for a brief period (about two years) back in the mid-1990’s, (when I was a “Grunge Girl”) it was very much an artist space. Brooklyn is my favorite borough, after Manhattan. It’s edgy and cool. Even my coolest friends all lived in Brooklyn. It’s working-class and no-nonsense; however, there might be more yuppies there now, converting real estate and increasing in ...

These are letters that I wrote in 1996. They show the struggle that I went through to establish myself here. I had terrible trouble finding housing; I slept on couches and hard-wood floors for long stretches of time. I spent most of my time living in Brooklyn in an art loft space with two other roommates. I loved the nightlife and I went to bars and clubs, and tried out for rock bands. It was hard for me, because housing costs were high and job competition was steep. But I truly loved New York City, and I was determined to make it my home for many years to come.

Parents usually hope their kids learn from the mistakes they made when they were their age. They tell them stories about when they were kids and how life was different. Occasionally, the life of a child mirrors the life of a parent. How the child reacts to those similar situations is largely affected by how the parent raised them—or didn’t. This series of essays—often humorous, sometimes downbeat—chronicles the author’s life from birth to just shy of forty, demonstrating how events in his life mirror those of his mother. Their situations while seemingly very different, were often eerily similar. How each reacted and the results that followed, however, are quite different. With ex ...
