Since Otto Wood was seven years old, he had been in trouble with the law, and was notorious for his escapes from the law. He wrote his life history while serving a thirty-year sentence for killing a man in 1923. His hopes were that the book would help a lost soul from going down the same road as he. While, he did not take his own advice, for the last time, he again escaped prison and was killed in a shootout with the Law on December 31, 1930.

This is an account of Michael Wagner and Kunigunda Kraus and their four month journey while emigrating from Bavaria to Illinois. There were eight adults and four children in this group of simple peasant farmers who risked everything they had when they departed their beloved village to travel over 6,500 miles between June and October of 1845. Every attempt was made to be historically faithful regarding this story, including dates, names, landmarks, even the weather. All of the characters mentioned by name actually existed, including the “hermit” in Hausen and “Captain Siefert Geerken” commanding the sailing ship. My grandfather, Otis L. Linn, used a small pocket notebook in the spring and summer of 1919 to record daily information of his activities, observations, and thoughts in the days and weeks before he embarked onboard an Army Transportation Service troop ship from Marseilles to New York City by way of Gibraltar and the Azores. The notebook means less by itself than as a supplement to the book of Otis's letters to his family from October 1918 to July 1919. The letters have been published in book form as The Letters of Otis L. Linn With the Y.M.C.A. in France Serving the American Expeditionary Force 1918 & 1919.
