Ebenezer and Phebe Goodell Doty and their descendants are the focus of this effort. Ebenezer was the son of Amaziah and Bethiah Hamlin Doty, who were the first to begin the family's westward migration from Massachusetts to Vermont where Ebenezer was born in 1789. Next, north and west into New York and Ohio. Ebenezer's service in the War of l812 entitled him to bounty land in Illinois. In 1852 Ebenezer and several of his children began the first of two trips by wagon train from Knox County, Illinois to San Jose, California, where Ebenezer died January 1st, 1860. Three of Ebenezer's sons later moved south to Santa Barbara County, California

The names of many of the characters in the story are the neighbors and shirttail relatives I knew or heard about from my mother and her siblings. Some characters are real with fictitious names; some characters are fictitious with names of real people. I played with Sandra Rae and Mickey Wells, and Barbara Ann Bennington. Wendell Patterson took me for a short ride on his two-wheeler bicycle when I was four. Lucille Patterson Mauk was my mom’s best friend since early childhood. They attended the Woodland School and McKell High School. Our family attended the Brick Union Christian Church. James Douglas White is a friend from college.
