Jack E. Thornton spent his childhood exploring and exploiting the neighborhoods and wild spaces of Walla Walla, Washington. He later attended Washington State University where his love for animals led him to study veterinary medicine. Despite his desire to work with wildlife, independence and freedom drew him to open the Blue Mountain Animal Clinic, a private practice in Sequim, Washington. This punster, poet and provocateur shares short stories centered around animals he encountered throughout his childhood and veterinary practice.

Continually reassigned to new congregations every year or two, in the Methodist tradition, he served in Windham, Ashland, Prattsville, Roxbury, Walton, Andes, Bovina, Livingstonville and many other places. He was married to Sarah Jane Bushnell (1834-1909), and had four children, William Alvin, Flora Auguta, Sarah Kittie, and Leona.

This is the story of the author and his family, and the thousands who worked on the E. Clemens Horst Company Hop Ranch. The story parallels the documented history of events on the ranch that impacted the author’s life and the lives of residents in the small town of Independence, Oregon. Interwoven throughout the story are never seen before photographs from the author’s family archives, along with other historical photographs. The narrative roughly follows the chronological sequence of raising hops from early spring planting through the end of harvest in September.
