Book Synopsis
This undergraduate thesis explores the interplay between culture, locality, and Christian ministry in Africa using the medium of narrative journalism. Through interviews with Christians from Liberia, Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia, it highlights local missionary stories in Africa and aims to diversify the Western understanding of overseas ministry. Chapter one examines healthy international partnership through stories from Pat Pieters, an ex-Catholic retiree in Liberia. Chapter two discusses handling racial and religious tensions and the importance of local ministry ownership through stories from Sarah Smith, a female entrepreneur in Kenya who works with Muslim immigrants. Chapter three explores the interaction between Christian ministry and cultural structures in Africa through stories from Rachel Guy, a college student running a nonprofit in Uganda for imprisoned children. Each chapter concludes with an analysis of the interview content and several applications.
