Book Synopsis
Joe Henderson, son of Evangelist Vernon Henderson, his
mother Florence and brother Jim, reside in a temporary
apartment in Portland, Oregon. It’s the mid 1950’s. The
parents attend Missionary School; Joe delivers the
Oregonian newspaper every morning, rain or shine.

Joe is a street-smart 16 year-old entrepreneur. He keeps a
set of index cards he calls his “opportunity cards”:
“Twins MK”: the master key opens all Twins apartments.
“P. Silver” means Philip, Jim’s friend, has many silver dollars.

Missionary training completed, departure for Costa Rica is
imminent. Joe exercises several criminal opportunities. He
is captured by Philip’s father; beaten, arrested, and taken to
jail. Strict, boot camp-like reform school follows.

Released to his parents, the family travels to Oklahoma. Joe
meets and falls in love with Naomi Kaliope, a Hawaiian
transplant. A dramatic change - from thief to lover - takes
place in our young protagonist.
