Evelyn Peterson's first book, The Monster, brings to mind another first book - Genesis. But instead of the eating of an apple we are warned against turning a page and facing the monster. The enticement to turn pages is irresistable. We experience a moment of hesitation after being warned on page one, but not heeding subsequent warnings becomes easier once we survive ignoring the first warning. The allurement to turn the page increases even though the author offers to rescue us from our surrender to temptation with nails, glue, bricks and keys to safety. But our couriosity predominates and our penalty for disobience is paid. Evelyn taps into our propensity to want to act contrary to what we are told, even though we know better. Her book is short, well laid out, and easy to read, with eye-catching colorful fonts and illustrations. It's fun and a good first effort.
