A wonderful book cleverly worded to the popular 7th-inning-stretch tune of Take Me Out To the Ball Game.
Growing up with cattle, we went to the sales barn once a year to auction off our black angus beef steers, heifers, and occasional older cow.
My brothers and I quickly learned to keep our eye on the scale and the flashing $/lb sign when our own calves were let in to the small arena to be weighed, studied and auctioned off to someone who wanted to better their own herd, or to someone who just wanted some good ol' lean organic black angus beef.
After the "SOLD! to #874", we excitedly went to the cashier to receive our own check for the calf we had raised. (My dad did not charge us kids for any expenses to raise and feed our calves. It wasn't until years later that I realized that was his way of thanking us for doing the daily chores we often tried to get out of doing.) After selling our calves, we celebrated by eating at the little sales barn cafe or down the street at the local Dairy Queen. I'm so very thankful my children were able to experience this and make their own memories with Grandpa Bobby. Love, Mom
