Book Synopsis
One of the most gruesome murders in Clinton, Iowa's history was discovered on the morning of May 30, 1950. The deed was incredibly violent, random, and most of all, undeserved. That morning, South Clinton was turned upside down by the horrible thing that had been found in an onion patch in the alley of Twelfth Avenue South, right in the center of the neighborhood. Some residents would cautiously make their way over to the scene, unsure of what they hoped to see. Other neighbors stepped out and tried to help the police as they processed the scene, while others still hid in their homes. Everyone was talking about it, the horrible thing that had happened to one of their own. Some speculated as to who the culprit was, and others swapped morbid details of varying authenticity. Whatever way the neighbors reacted to the news that morning, they all would lock their doors that night. Everyone, including the police, was left with the same question: Who Left Lillian Chapman in the alley?
