Book Synopsis
Hempstead Basketball Hardwood Legends and Blacktop
Ballers is a tribute written by Edwin Atlas to pay respect to
the countless number of players, coaches and supporters
who collectively contributed to the Village of Hempstead's
recognition as "The Mecca" of Long Island basketball from
the 60's through the early 80's. He gathered conversations
from Hempstead Hoops Group Facebook page and other
sources. He combined them with his recollection of his
playing experiences and weaved them into a poetic lyrical
format. This composition attempts to capture memories
perhaps not mentioned elsewhere and share these tales
with the basketball community.
"The Jore of basketball in Hempstead is usually told at
reunions, celebrations, funerals, etc. My friend Ed Atlas has
poetically captured the essence of the "glory years". In this
book he has adequately memorialized the ballers that put fear
in the heart of the competition and thrilled the hometown
crowds. This is a must read for anyone interested in learning
about the Long Island Mecca of basketball".
