Book Synopsis
In defiance of the maxim that “Art cannot be political,” this collection of poems sensitively and eloquently charts the depths of the hunger for power, revealing the devastating effect of this drive on individuals and nations. Janet Phelan delineates a world “held captive"—by both the machinations of the few and the complicity of the many—and challenges our world view in the face of a planet under siege.

Residentially challenged floats through my mind as I try to imagine the horrors living without stability. These captivating poems are riveting in their description of the other side of life that we try our best to block out and pretend that all is well. Thank you to this marvelous poet and advocate for extending herself to that other side for all the rest of us - not that it was necessarily by choice. But it happened. And she's still alive still, which must be because angels watch over her. Even after Dawson took her to that room underneath the parking lot where she was held for three days. She is still alive, and she still speaks out. Thank you. Janet Pipes
