Book Synopsis
Congregation for the Outcasts is a documentation of the Heavy Rock scene in and around Kansas City, Missouri. The give-and-take exchange of emotional energy between fans and musicians fuels performances within these genres and opens the door for intense communal displays of energy and emotion. The venues of these congregations often lack many official rules, but the unwritten code among those involved often opens the door for camaraderie and compassion within the crowd. To quote Sully Erna of Godsmack, “This is a f****** rock crowd; the people that still go to live shows and want to feed off that energy instead of staying home and watching this s*** on Instagram.” The purpose of Congregation for the Outcasts is to reveal these moments to those for which they may go unnoticed or misinterpreted, as well as represent these communities in a positive light.
