Book Synopsis
A “proverb” is a short sentence that summarizes a wise saying. This is a fitting title for the book.
Outlines and Summary of the Book
I. Wisdom's call (Ch.1-9) A father is instructing his children, and is praising wisdom to them. Wisdom is personified as a lovely and virtuous woman, calling men to come to her and enjoy the blessings of God. Folly is personified as a wicked, immoral harlot who also calls men and entices them, but she entices them with lies and leads them down the path to destruction. II. Wisdom’s Contrasts (Ch.10-15) A series of proverbs, most of which are presented as contrasts, showing what wisdom does, then what folly does. III. Wisdom’s Counsels (Ch.16-31) Proverbs on practical matters, but for the most part, not stated as contrasts.
