James is the author of this epistle; thought to be written around 45 A.D. He is the half-brother of the Lord Jesus Christ (Matt.13:55; Gal.1:19) and the full brother of Judas/Jude who wrote the book of Jude.
James was a leader in the early church in Jerusalem (Acts 12:17; 21:18), also he was the moderator of the church council described in Acts 15.
The book of James is known as a general epistle, called such because it was not addressed to any local church, but to believers in general (twelve tribes scattered abroad). It was most likely the first New Testament book to be written, but the last to be accepted into the canon of Scripture.
