Book Synopsis
Parents usually hope their kids learn from the mistakes they made when they were their age. They tell them stories about when they were kids and how life was different. Occasionally, the life of a child mirrors the life of a parent. How the child reacts to those similar situations is largely affected by how the parent raised them—or didn’t.
This series of essays—often humorous, sometimes downbeat—chronicles the author’s life from birth to just shy of forty, demonstrating how events in his life mirror those of his mother. Their situations while seemingly very different, were often eerily similar. How each reacted and the results that followed, however, are quite different. With excerpts from his mother, the lessons learned during her childhood serve as the backstory for her son’s life. From being shot at to bra shopping and road-trips to codependency, this book is a self-reflection of how we become—or avoid becoming—our parents.

I find myself getting lost in the pages of Camping with Strangers. Not only does Rob do a great job of sharing his personal history, he captures his mother's experience with such realism and authenticity. As a self proclaimed Boom Hater, Camping with Strangers has converted me to a Book Tolerator. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to feel as though they're not the only person with an oddball cast of familial characters within their life.
About The Author
Author bio image
A self-described beach boy who grew up to be a mountain man, Rob is no stranger to eclectic life. Along the way he has been a soldier, butler, college composition instructor, etiquette expert, and a more-by-accident-than-design handyman. When he isn't teaching writing or actually writing, he's either in his wood-shop making saw dust, tracking said saw dust through the house on some DIY quest, or out gallivanting around with his husband, Bill.
