Book Synopsis

This book reproduces two decks of letterpress printed cards by Stuart Bradley and the Railway Station Press. Both decks used characters drawn from the Midway of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair / Columbian Exposition. The type foundry BB&S sold these small printers ornaments.

In 2008 Stuart Bradley scanned these small images and had Owosso in Michigan manufacture two inch high copper dies of all 35 characters. He then printed a limited edition of one hundred decks of playing cards using 14 of the characters.

In 2012, the second deck of History cards were letterpress printed in a limited edition of 130 decks and used all 35 characters on 3.5 by 5 inch cards. This book also contains the results of research about the first ever Midway at the 1893 Fair and the first ever Ferris Wheel, with historical photographs and maps.

Railway Station Press is a small nonfiction book publisher based in Alexandria, Virginia. It started out as a letterpress print shop in an old train station in the Shenandoah Valley.

The Railway Station Press logo is based on a woodcut by Maryland artist Christopher Manson, who is the author and illustrator of many children's books and a letterpress printer.
