Young Miss Alysoun unhappily accompanies her aunt, Dame Alys, on a pilgrimage to Rome after surviving the Black Death that claimed most of their family and community. Embarrassed by her loud and demanding aunt, they accompany a colorful pageant of pilgrims through a Europe recovering from a lingering and deadly epidemic.

Two brothers go to Texas to learn cattle and save their wages to get a ranch for their mother and younger siblings. The people they meet and the situations they encounter very much change and influence the rest of their lives in ways they would never have ever thought.

Brothers working with a supply wagon train are rescued by a Mexican guerrilla leader, who is attempting to get the Country’s President back in the Capital. They offer their help. Many surprises are in store for them.

A ranch in Mexico gives the family a home and a place to grow. Learning how to work on a ranch requires people who know how to teach those who do not. Acquaintances from the past are hired to teach skills as the family learns how to work a ranch and become more than family.

He had been away from the family for four years. Losing his brothers had made him doubt he could be alone. After all this time life had shown him he could and he had done many things. A final incident convinced him to start home. That would prove to change his life.

Having to leave the ranch in Mexico because of the change of that government causes upheaval for the family. Larry goes to visit another rancher he trusts but finds some of the herd has been stolen. Larry and several of his riders decide it would be fun to join the rustlers back to their Boss to catch them and it proves to be the adventure of a lifetime.

Finding a perfect place to make a new home and ranch is only the beginning. Building houses and barn with winter coming is vital. The family lives in the barn while the builder family gets the first house completed. The Spring brings not only warmer weather, but the return of the herd which had been left in Texas, and a missing member of the family … and a surprising visitor.

The peace of the family and ranch are disrupted by a tragedy. Loyalties are deepened. Past lives are explained. Family ties are tightened.

A new division for the ranch needs new experts in that field. As Larry is looking for new men, he is revisiting many of the places he had been at the same ages as the two sons he had brought with him. Teaching his boys what was needed in a rider for the ranch, they find two men who prove to be more than good horse men.

The older riders had taught the younger ones. They in turn had taught the next younger. A new century brings small changes to the ranch but great changes to many of the riders. The joys of life sometime don’t come to you until later in life. A necessary trip back to a place of birth causes pain but gives back later joy.
