This dissertation is an ethnographic study analyzing how four improvising musicians articulate their music as social interaction and how they conceive of their practice in a larger stylistic and historical context. The musicians—Andrea Neumann, Joe McPhee, Suzanne Thorpe, and Axel Dörner—share in interviews the formative factors of their music practice, including the direct influence of local music scenes, socio-cultural considerations, gender and race dynamics, and their intimate relations to their instruments. In my analysis, I focus on: first, their sense of agency in a context of individuality and community; second, performativity in music and the relation between musical practice a ...

Rudiments are to drummers as scales are to more tonal instruments. They are the foundation of all we play. For decades drummers were introduced to only 26 rudiments. Eventually, the number grew to 40, but I still didn’t think that was enough. Through the years, I had developed dozens more rudimental rhythms, trying to fill what I saw as gaps between the established rudiments. Now I have gathered these new and innovative rudimental rhythms and added them to the original 26 and the PAS 40 to form an all new must have book for serious drummers.

I wrote “End of Twilight” throughout my Sophomore year of college. The very title “End of Twilight” implies the end of darkness. This is symbolic of the fear a child has of the dark and night time. The piece begins in a beautiful chorale as a sort of lullabye before bedtime, however, the piece then becomes dark as the night sets in and the piece tells the frightening story throughout the night eventually leading to the end, the end of twilight.

These songs were extremely popular during the Civil War. Unheard for over a century and a half, they were a vital part of life during their time. They tell the day-to-day stories of lives, desires, opinions, politics, and feelings of the people, stories that can't be found in history books. Originally published without music notation - lyrics only - as song sheets, broadsides and in songsters. The melodies have been carefully researched for accuracy, then adapted and arranged by Ed Swanzey, professional musician and history buff, and descendant of a Civil War veteran.
