Book Synopsis
It was my second year of teaching in Sierra Leone, this was 2012, back when the country wasn't famous for Ebola yet, just for a civil war and conflict diamonds. I wanted to leave the village where I was teaching, Waridala, and see some new places. I wanted to do it by bicycle.

I decided to travel with some friends to Tiwai Island in the southern part of the country, an inland island located on the Moa River. “Big Island” the name means in Mende. It is a wildlife preserve, famous for its large population of monkeys. Once the trip began, I was soon reminded that, as a white foreigner, I stand out conspicuously. I had intended on seeing the country but often it was me who was on display for the curious locals.

But from the vantage point of the bicycle, I was able to catch a glimpse of the country on its own terms: the eclectic mix of languages, the carefully made farms and houses all fashioned by hand, and the friendly and hospitable people.
