There's not a lot of books on this subject and online information is full of advertising so this would be a good supplement to your online research

Great book, interesting reading and very informative for surgery abroad and at home. I had no idea there were so many things to consider for surgery abroad. I am much more informed now and the checklists provide well defined step by step assistance through the process.

I purchased this book because I am a physiotherapist who receives many requests from patients to provide exercise conditioning programs for weight loss and many of these patients go on to have bariatric surgery, in which case they require specialized post-op exercise programs. more and more frequently patients are considering having procedures performed at surgical facilities outside of Canada, where I live and work, and I am often asked what I think of such surgeries, and if I recommend it. I can only recommend pre and post-op physical conditioning, but THIS book is something EVERYONE considering surgery outside of their home country, should read.

The author, with a background as an operating nurse and government adviser on surgical instrumental sterilization, covers topics that most people would not even begin to think about - everything from getting the time off work, having a financial contingency plan, interviewing facilities and doctors and what things to ask, to vaccinations and visas required. Well laid out and extremely informative without being preachy, this book includes a 26 point pre-surgery safety checklist and it brings up all of the things a person should consider when making such a decision. I have already loaned out my copy to a few patients to help them decide if surgery abroad is the right choice for them. Not just for the bariatric patient, the topics serve anyone considering dental, plastic, and orthopedic procedures. Highly recommended.

With aging parents looking for options to deal with health concerns, I love how this resource clearly guides us in evaluating the possibility of shopping for medical procedures outside the country. Heck! I'm even considering a dental vacation in Mexico! Janet's background as an ER nurse and Canadian government leading expert on medical equipment sterilization best practices makes me confident that the information in this book is top notch. If you or someone you love is considering surgery abroad, don't make any plans until you've read this book.

Informative however the author lacks cohesiveness with her writing which makes it difficult to read. Ideas presented are redundant and do not seem well thought out. Many simple errors in grammar that could have been picked up with one revision.
