In this excerpt from Russell' novel, PURVIS'S WARS, the author's protagonist, Sgt. Ken Purvis, is a former U.S. Army correspondent, back from Korea in 1953 and assigned to a boring desk job. Turned down by the U.S. military to be assigned to Indochina, Purvis takes annual leave and arrives in Indochina posing as a reporter only to find himself in trouble with certain "mysterious" elements. Along the way however, he tells the story of the secret and brave CIA "contract pilots" The battle of Dien Bien Phu and the loss of Indochina by the French has been considered a precursor to America's entry into the Southeast Asian conflict.
