Book Synopsis
1920s Chicago. Brady Washington is a cool kid living at Thompson’s School for Black Orphans. Beyond his wildest dreams, he never foresaw himself being the hitter that would win the city championship, especially since he had never hit a ball in a real game before. The cost? A broken ankle, which was totally worth it.

After getting his cast, Brady sits in a waiting room at Cook County Hospital where he meets a nice white man, Barry Clark, who looks distraught. Brady asks and Mr. Clark tells the young boy that he just lost his wife. Brady hobbles next to him and holds his hand then tells him that he had also lost his parents three years earlier and knew how he felt.

The odd pair instantly becomes friends. Before Brady has to leave, the nice Mr. Clark is the 1st to sign the young boy’s cast nicknaming him, “Slugger”. The small boy is so elated when his friends follow Mr. Clark’s lead.

Then Brady gets adopted and all hell breaks loose for the young boy as fights bravely for his life.
