Book Synopsis
After graduating from the College of Wooster in 1967, Roger Williamson enlisted in the US Army knowing that his path would likely lead to the jungles of Vietnam. By 1968 he ended up there as an Advisor to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. Even far from home, his connection to his family and friends remained strong. So many letters from the people he loved -especially his Mom- kept him encouraged. He wrote often offering bland details of the war to keep his family from worrying about his safety. His stories show the fear, frustration, anger and sometimes humorous situations he encountered as a young Lieutenant in an increasingly unpopular war.

A well-written memoir of the author’s wartime experiences in Vietnam. He relates a year filled with all the strife and tragedy of war, yet his humor and the strong family ties that supported him shine through.

Thoughtful and honest account of Williamson's experiences as a soldier in Viet Nam in the '60's told through his letters home and letters to him from his mother. Although it's impossible for the reader to fully experience the horrors of combat and the loss of life of close friends and comrades, the author writes a valuable first-person account occasionally leavened with humor. (I have nightmares about those little green poisonous snakes hanging from the trees!) The enduring power of letters to convey history is on full display here.
