Book Synopsis
The names of many of the characters in the story are the neighbors and shirttail relatives I knew or heard about from my mother and her siblings. Some characters are real with fictitious names; some characters are fictitious with names of real people. I played with Sandra Rae and Mickey Wells, and Barbara Ann Bennington. Wendell Patterson took me for a short ride on his two-wheeler bicycle when I was four. Lucille Patterson Mauk was my mom’s best friend since early childhood. They attended the Woodland School and McKell High School. Our family attended the Brick Union Christian Church. James Douglas White is a friend from college. He was my orchestra director and classical violinist. He and his wife, Julie, have made a huge impact on the young music students in Ownesboro, Kentucky. Michelline, our daughter, danced in a contemporary ballet company in New York City.

I tried to make the historical events and public figures in the story as true and correct as I could. I would love to hear your stories about Grays Branch. I’m sure we have a connection. Write me at: coonrods@netscape.net.

About The Author
Author bio image
I lived in Grays Branch until I was seven years old when my family moved to Louisville. My grandmother, Mattie Hill Merrill, and most of the family stayed in the Greenup area, so there were lots of visits to this lovely place I still hold dear to my heart.

I have spent my adult life as music teacher and cellist with the Traverse Symphony Orchestra for 38 years, and volunteered with our church’s Community Meals program for 25 years; I also work with a team each year with children in a village in Haiti.

My husband, Michael, is a concert pianist, teaching at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Our two sons and their wives live near us in the Grand Traverse area of northern Michigan, and our daughter is a tango dancer in Las Vegas. We have four grandchildren and celebrate our 50th anniversary this year.
