Book Synopsis
Affable counterhop Chip Rock sat on a frozen box of roasting rabbits, trapped inside the freezer of the infested butcher shop known as Meatland. Saturday night. The goon who locked Chip in laughed and said, “Sleep tight, amigo” as he removed the red emergency escape axe and jammed the heavy door shut. Chip glanced at the thermometer: 15 degrees. Fahrenheit. Great, Chip thought. I’m all alone. Meatland won’t reopen til Monday. By then they'll find my frozen corpse next to a box of pork chops.
Set in the wilting So Cal beachtown of No Palms, CHIP ROCK and the FAT OLD FART tells the story of the comic and poignant friendship between 23 year old Chip and old-school meat cutter Deacon O’Dell. Cheerfully written, Chip explores the glue which binds together imperfect families and flawed friendships.
Michael Daswick lives in Scottsdale. He graduated from Columbia where he won the Bennett Cerf Memorial Prize for Fiction, and the Cornell Woolrich Fellowship for Creative Writing

Chip Rock is witty, unpredictable, and endearing. His pal Deacon O'Dell is a dreadful drunk who is disdained by every little old lady in the No Palms Women's Club. By the end of the book, Deacon is utterly adorable. FAT OLD FART is the rare book which will be read by twenty different people, who will come up with twenty different meanings.
Chip and Deacon craft a version of brotherhood which is unlike any other. As Chip comes of age and Deacon's wrenching search for his father and son intensifies, the mesmerizing conclusion will challenge the bedrock of your beliefs as to what a real family is all about. Brilliantly written.
