This work explores the multifaceted aspects of the devastating crime of arson and will touch on the related subject of explosives and their use by criminals. We begin with a definition of the crime as identified in Law, including arson's classification as a crime and the usual punishment subsequent to conviction, and describe the body of the crime/elements necessary to prove an arson has occurred. An observation in-brief is given of statistical data revealing the impact that arson and related crimes has on our society. Finally, an examination will be presented as to how arson investigators today utilize the full spectrum of forensic science, along with traditional, relentless, and painstaking detective work to overcome the numerous challenges associated with what is arguably one of the most specialized areas of criminal justice — arson investigation.
